Falmouth Event to Feature Shark Expert Greg Skomal

WOODS HOLE – State shark expert Dr. Greg Skomal will be the next featured speaker in the Marine Biological Laboratory’s Falmouth Forum series.

The senior biologist with the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries will discuss his research on great white shark behavior on Friday, October 4 at 7:30 p.m. in the MBL’s Lillie Auditorium in Woods Hole.

Cape Cod has emerged as the only known aggregation site for white sharks in the western North Atlantic Ocean. The presence of the sharks is believed to be linked to the regional population recovery of gray seals, which are prey for the apex predators.

Skomal is an accomplished marine biologist, underwater explorer, photographer and author. He has been a fisheries scientist with the DMF since 1987 and currently heads up the Massachusetts Shark Research Program.

He is also adjunct faculty at the University of Massachusetts School for Marine Science and Technology and an adjunct scientist at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. Skomal holds a master’s degree from the University of Rhode Island and a Ph.D. from Boston University.

The MBL Falmouth Forum series is presented by the Friends of the MBL and is offered as a cultural connection between the MBL and the Cape Cod Community. The series is free and open to the public. Free parking is also available in any MBL lot.
