2015 Capecod.com All-Cape & Islands Track & Field Coach of the Year: Mike Merrill, Barnstable High School

The 2015 spring outdoor high school track and field season witnessed some fantastic and historic moments with its culmination last month, not least of which being the complete, 180-degree turnaround for the Barnstable High School boys track & field program that had not seen a league championship title since 2001.

But former Barnstable High Red Raider track star now head coach Mike Merrill took the team over last year and this spring forged a season to remember, not to fail to mention a complete revitalization of the oldest high school track & field program on Cape Cod.

Merrill led his Red Raider boys to a perfect 8-0 season and the Old Colony League championship title and that milestone – not reached by a BHS boys’ track & field team in 15 years – was done with insightful, in-school recruiting, focused character development of individual athletes, and the fostering of a true team chemistry in a sport that relies almost wholly on individual drive and skill.

One of Barnstable High School’s all-time greatest track athletes, Merrill went on to run at Bentley and then returned to his alma mater to re-pave some of the record-setting stones he himself once set. There was little question that he was our selection for 2015 Capecod.com All-Cape & Islands Track & Field Coach of the Year.

2015 Capecod.com All-Cape & Islands Track & Field Male Athlete of the Year: Craig Green, Falmouth High School

It almost seemed mathematically, if not physically impossible.

For a freshman running at the varsity level for the first time four years ago, running against seasoned speed-demons and upper classmen could have proven daunting enough for Falmouth High School’s Craig Green, but simply put, it did not deter him for one split-second from setting a course on a career that was nothing short of sheer brilliance.

Craig Green – one of Falmouth High School’s all-time greatest track athletes – never lost a single 100-meter race in his entire four-year varsity career and he capped that career off with a 10.65 time in the MIAA Division 3 State Championship to take home the individual state crown.

He then topped that 100M state title with a phenomenal 21.40 time on the boys’ 200M race and was crowned a two-event state champion.

Both of Green’s times and gold medal finishes were national qualifiers and Green went on in mid-June to race at the 2015 New Balance National High School Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the University of North Carolina’s AT&T Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, NC. He finished in 12th place, nationally, in that 100M race with a time of 10.86.

In the National 200M race, Green finished 16th overall in the country with a time of 22.02, not too shabby for the three-time Atlantic Coast League champ and two-time MIAA State Champion and now, the 2015 Capecod.com All-Cape & Islands Track & Field Male Athlete of the Year.

2015 Capecod.com All-Cape & Islands Track & Field Female Athlete of the Year: Chloe Eressy, Dennis-Yarmouth

With so many countless top runners not only at Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School but across the Cape, it seems almost uncanny that an underclassman and a field event athlete would garner consideration for Capecod.com’s Female Athlete of the Year honors.

But Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School sophomore shotput thrower Chloe Eressy – a veritable Olympian in the making – received just that consideration and then some.

Setting, breaking and re-setting school records this season in the shotput, Eressy came forward as a leader by example in every possible way in arguably one of the toughest field events there is, but she came through with flying colors.

And then she added a new school record in the discus.

Named the Atlantic Coast League’s Thrower of the Year and the Atlantic Coast League champion, Eressy came in 2nd place at the Eastern Massachusetts Division 3 championships, was 5th at All-States and came in 5th again at New Englands.

There was little doubt that her efforts spelled a considerable difference in Dennis-Yarmouth once again finishing the season at the very top and she is this year’s Capecod.com All-Cape & Islands Track & Field Female Athlete of the Year.
