NORTH ANDOVER – Massachusetts All-State Heavyweight champion Owen Murray, a Barnstable High senior captain, and Sandwich High senior captain Greg Zaw both notched key victories yesterday at the 2015 CNESSPA New England High School Wrestling Championships, and tomorrow will vie for a New England title.
If successful, Murray will be crowned the first-ever New England wrestling champion in his weight class in Barnstable High School history.
Murray, the top-ranked heavyweight in the state, pinned North Attleboro High’s Brennan Sankey (1:34) for a 2-0 win in the championship preliminary round. He will face Foran High School’s (CT) Luke Edmondson in the championship quarterfinals today.
120-lb. Sandwich High grappler Greg Zaw, pound-for-pound the top wrestler for the Blue Knights and seeded number two from Massachusetts, defeated Mt. Anthony High School’s (VT) Tyler Raetz (0:47) by a 2-0 score. Zaw will advance today to the championship quarterfinals against Foran High’s (CT) Ryan Luth.
Sandwich High’s Matt Landry, seeded 5th in the 145-lb. division, dropped a pair of tough losses yesterday. He fell to Bedford High’s Yurii Gromokov by a 10-3 decision, had a bye in the next round and then fell again. Agawam’s Anthony Basile just edged Landry in a 4-3 decision.Basile is seeded #2.
