VIDEO: Whitecaps and Kettleers Record Cape League Season’s First Wins on Opening Day

BREWSTER – deadlocked at 4-4 with the visiting Wareham Gatemen (0-1), the Brewster Whitecaps (1-0) recorded their first heroic moment of the 2015 Cape Cod Baseball League season when Tennessee second baseman Nick Senzel hammered a seventh-inning RBI triple for what would prove to be the gamewinner.

Whitecaps’ centerfieldr Ryan Peurifoy (Georgia Tech) led off the bottom of the seventh inning when he was hit by a Zach Plesac pitch and then came home on Senzel’s triple to make it 5-4. Plesac, a sophomore righty out of Ball State, came out of the game and was relieved by Shea Spitzbarth (Molloy College) but the fifth run proved enough for the hosts to take the win.

Whitecaps’ reliever Zachary Ryan (Georgia Tech) got the win in 3.2 innings of relief work for starter Anthony Arias (Fresno State) who went 5.1 innings and struck out 10 while walking four and allowing all four Wareham runs in the sixth inning. Arias struck out the side in the first and looked solid.

Ryan’s Georgia Tech teammate Brandon Gold, the Whitecaps’ first baseman, made an auspicious start to the season with a 3-4 day at the plate and three RBI and also recorded the first basehit of the 2015 Cape League season as the Whitecaps and Gatemen started earlier than the other eight teams.

Logan Sowers (Indiana) went 1-3 with one RBI for the Gatemen.

Haynie Home Run Snaps 1-1 Deadlock with Harwich Mariners, Wins Game for Cotuit Kettlers

HARWICH – BFC Whitehouse Field seemed in mid-summer stride on Opening Day with nearly 800 fans in attendance as the visiting Cotuit Kettleers (1-0) broke a 1-1 deadlock in the seventh inning for their first win of the season – 3-1 – against the host Harwich Mariners (0-1).

In the top of the second inning, the Kettleers received back-to-back basehits from Tanner Stanley (Richmond) and Keenan Innis (Georgia Tech) and Stanley scored on a wild pitch from Harwich starter Scott Tully to make it 1-0.

But the hosts evened things in the bottom of the third inning at 1-1 when Bryant University’s Cole Fabio led off with a double off of Cotuit starter Alex Winkleman (Southeast Missouri State University) and then scored on a Saige Jenco (Virginia Tech) opposite-field basehit. Winkleman got a pair of outs in the third but with one man on field manager Mike Roberts went to the bullpen for Mississippi State southpaw Daniel Brown with return Mariner Cavan Biggio (Notre Dame) coming up.

Biggio (2-4) smashed a basehit to centerfield regardless of the change but Brown settled to strike out Drew Ellis to end the potential rally with the score remaining 1-1.

Harwich threatened again in the bottom of the sixth inning with basehits from Biggio and Connor Justus (Georgia Tech) but with one out the Kettleers weren’t taking any chances as Roberts went to the bullpen again for Penn State righty Jack Anderson who induced a pair of groundouts to end the threat. After 1.1 innings of work, Anderson came out but he notched his first Cape League win when his Kettleers’ teammates plated a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Still tied at 1-1, Harwich started the top of the seventh inning with a new man on the mound in relief of Tully – Anthony Ciavarella (Monmouth State). Ciavarella retired the first two Kettleers he faced but then Flagler’s Kolin McMillen singled, stole second base and came home on catcher Wil Haynie’s first home run of the season that gave Cotuit a 3-1 lead and all it would need to win.

Hyannis Harbor Hawks Outlast Host Falmouth Commodores in 11-inning Tilt

Tied at 3-3 in what promised to be a potential Opening Day marathon, Falmouth Commodores’ freshman All-American Garrett Brummett (Emporia State) came in to start the top of the 11th inning and the visiting Hyannis Harbor Hawks welcomed the righty the hard way.

Hyannis second baseman JaVon Shelby (Kentucky/3-5) led off the 11th with a double on a 1-2 count, then was awarded third base on a balk before coming home for the eventual game-winning run on a sacrifice fly from Colby Bortles (Ole Miss) that made it 4-3.

The Harbor Hawks tacked on another run when Nick Pappas (College of Charleston) walked with one out, was pinch-run for by Errol Robinson (Ole Miss) and Robinson came home on an RBI-double from Georgia Tech catcher Arden Pabst (3-5, RBI).

With the score now 5-3 heading into the bottom of the 11th, the Commodores had two men on with two outs before Memphis righty Nolan Blackwood closed the door for his first win of the season.

Orleans’ Pitchers Combine for One-Hitter over Bourne Braves in Opener

Firebirds’ Field Manager Kelly Nicholson sent four pitchers to the mound Tuesday night and the collective combined to throw a one-hit, 1-0, shutout over the defending West Division champion Bourne Braves at Eldredge Park in Orleans.

Stetson righty Mitchell Jordan allowed that one hit but that was all as he struck out five in five innings of work and walked just one for his first win of the season. He was relieved by Corbin Burnes (Saint Mary’s) for two innings, Kit Scheetz (Virginia Tech) followed Burnes for one inning and Loyola Marymount’s Sean Watkins closed it out in the ninth.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh in a scoreless game, Orleans’ Bryson Brigman (San Diego) was hit by a Keegan Akin (Western Michigan) pitch and went to second on an Adam Pate single. With men on first and second, USC’s Jeremy Martinez hammered an RBI-double to make it 1-0, giving Akin the loss.

Arizona State’s Colby Woodmansee, the Firebirds’ shortstop, was the sole batter in the game with multiple hits. He went 2-4.

Chatham Anglers Ride Mondou’s Bat for 5-1 Win over Y-D Red Sox

Tied 1-1 after two frames, the defending Cape League champion Y-D Red Sox watched the host Chatham Anglers add one run at a time starting in the third inning en route to a 5-1 Anglers’ victory on Opening Night at Veterans Field in downtown Chatham.

Wake Forest’s Nate Mondou (3-4, RBI) gave the Anglers all they would need in the bottom of the third inning after a Nicolas Falkson (Brandeis) leadoff single. Falkson advanced two bases on consecutive ground outs and with two outs Mondou hit a 2-1 pitch to center for a 2-1 Chatham lead.

The Anglers (1-0) added one run in the fourth and a pair in the fifth for what would ultimately be the 5-1 finale.

TJ Zeuch (Pitt) went 5.2 innings with two strikeouts, a walk and seven hits allowed for the win.

Gonzaga righty Brandon Bailey took the loss after four inning of work for the Red Sox (0-1). He struck out three batters, walked two and allowed three runs on four hits.
