That Girl’s Blog: A New Danger Zone

I am at a loss.

Most people know that I am the type of person who is up to any challenge on a moment’s notice! Demolition Derby? (Done it and won it!) Learn to ride a motorcycle? (Want to see my Harley?) Sit and chat with famous people? (I have the pictures to prove it!) Polar Plunge? (There is video!!)

So what is this new challenge that has me doubting every fiber in my being? You may not believe me, but here goes: CHILDREN

Now before you start scrolling through my Facebook page for an ultrasound image… NO… I am not having a baby. Unfortunately, I do not have children of my own. I have settled into the role of arm-chair quarterback when it comes to kids. I am happy to babysit and give gifts and hugs at any opportunity. I am also happy to listen and give support to my Mom-friends whenever possible. I am pretty good at simply being a big kid, too!

Recently, I have found myself with a new title: “Dad’s Girlfriend.” Much like legitimate parenting, this new role does not come with a guide book – and boy I wish it did!

I am thrilled to have a growing relationship with these children but I have to tell you, it’s difficult to know where the boundaries are. I don’t want to step on toes and I don’t want to be the wicked witch. What opinions can I share with these children and when do I bite my tongue? What is safe vs. fun vs down right irresponsible?

A few times a week I get to spend the evening with someone who has become my best friend and his children. They are wonderful kids! But they are also KIDS. And this makes me an “adult”- by default. I am learning that daily activities and adventures come with varying degrees of difficulty.

There are routine things like walking the dogs – EASY

There are decisions about dinner that often come with a FRUMPY FACE (sometimes theirs, sometimes the boyfriend and sometimes mine)

There are compromises about which movies to watch – NOT EASY

There are discussions about what we each learned that day (which can TAKE A GREAT DEAL OF COAXING)

Finally, there are situations like sibling squabbles and deciding when to give permission for things vs. when to step aside or anything that has to do with any kind of shopping (DANGER ZONE)

I am going to be completely honest: I don’t know what I am doing. I can barely make adult decisions for myself! In my world, a couple of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and a cup of coffee is a decent breakfast. Laundry and dishes are often done on a need-to-use basis and, sometimes, the only reason why I remember to feed the cat is because she follows me around the house meowing.

Basically, I am happy to listen to any and all advice you might have for me… In the meantime, concerts and tattoos: Good or Bad?
