That Girl’s Blog: A Rock in the Woods

"Listen to your heart"

I recently decided to change up my normal walking routine with my dog, Mazzy. Because of my odd schedule, I was in a routine of simply walking her around the block and calling it a night. Recently, there was a major change in my personal life. I will admit, I have been headed into a funk that needs to be corrected. Normally, I’d head to the beach for a long walk to clear my head, but it’s still too early for dogs to be on the beaches. I decided to leash up Mazzy and head to one of the many conservation areas I drive by every day. I am not sure why I never stopped before. It’s a woodsy area with paths that circle a clean clear pond. (I am not going to tell you which one, because I want you to discover your own special place to walk). And this place is special. It’s quiet with well worn paths. There aren’t a lot of people, even on a Sunday. Dogs are welcome and there are plenty of places to sit and contemplate. There is also inspiration and motivation along the paths.

The first time I walked along the paths, I noticed a peculiar rock. It was a little out of place and it had words carefully written on it: “Look for rainbows”. It was enough to make me smile. The next time I made a point to look at the base of trees and on stumps and found a few more stones with uplifting words and phrases. The third time, I noticed the rocks were not in the same places, and there seemed to be many more! Is there someone moving and placing rocks in different locations along the paths and walkways? Are there maybe woodland imps playing games? Maybe it’s the ghost of Hannah Screecham playing tricks on people who walk around the path in the wrong direction? (Don’t worry, I will tell you about Hanna another time).

I can’t say that I have completely pulled myself out of my personal funk, but I was smiling before my walk was over. I may even bring a Sharpie and a rock along the next time I bring Mazzy for a walk so I can give someone else a boost when they might not expect it.
