Hello, My Name Is: Betsy Siggins

Welcome to our new feature, “Hello My Name Is…”. I hope you are enjoying the chance to spend some time getting to know people in our community. As you know, the best way to learn about someone is to ask questions. In this series we ask ten questions to different individuals so that we can know the folks who live with us here on Cape Cod.

Hello, My Name Is… Betsy Siggins

Occupation: Founder of New England Folk Alliance

What was your first paying job?

A waitress in a coffee house in Boston. The Cafe Yana, one of of the first to feature folk music in Boston: 1958

When was the last time you laughed really hard?

When I got my award from the Boch Center, Feb .28th! What a joyous occasion!  Mayor Marty Walsh proclaimed February 28th “Betsy Siggins Day” in the City of Boston, in honor of her decades-long role as a central figure in the New England folk community and her dedication to integrating creative expression and social justice.

Did you grow up on the Cape? If not, where did you grow up and why did you come to the Cape?

Born in Boston but my dad moved us to Cotuit in 1947 when he went to work at The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Where is your ‘go-to’ spot for a cup of chowder?

As a kid, Wimpy’s… Now, homemade by a dear friend.

Do you have a favorite non-profit group here on the Cape?

The Cotuit Library; the heart of Cotuit’s community

What is the one thing you love to do that surprises people the most?

Act like an adult!

In a parallel universe, what would you be doing?

I’d be traveling the world discovering new and old music, cultures, traditions and communities.

What person had the greatest influence on you and why?

Joan Baez. She is a lifelong friend, who’s music and politics have continued to guide me.

If I looked in your refrigerator right now, what would I see?

Leftovers  from last nights dinner and yogurt. I don’t like to cook anymore! At my age (79) it’s a chore!

If you could go out on a boat fishing for a day, who would you bring?

My partner of 40 years and our kids.

We are always looking for new people to feature in “Hello, My Name Is…”. If you know an interesting member of the Cape community, please send us their name:[email protected]. When possible, please include their contact information and a little about them.
