Controversial Former Hyannis Dog Kennel Under Quarantine

ER medical symbolHANSON – A dog breeder whose Hyannis home was searched last fall has his kennel under quarantine because of the health of some of the German shepherds he is selling out of his new location in Hanson.

Augusto De Oliveira’s kennel, Griffin Shephard Kennels, was placed into quarantine on May 28 after state officials found dogs were sick with parvovirus, which is a highly contagious viral illness that can be fatal for puppies and kittens, according to Katie Gronendyke, press secretary for the state Office of Energy and Environmental Affairs.

Gronendyke said a veterinarian’s approval is needed to lift the quarantine.

As of Friday, June 12, the quarantine had still not been lifted.

The matter is under the state Division of Animal Health, part of the state Department of Agricultural Resources. That department is under Energy and Environmental Affairs.

The state Division of Animal Health becomes involved in cases involving pet shops, shelters or boarding kennels in which dogs are ill with certain contagious diseases, including parvovirus. In this case, the dogs are being offered for sale and coming and going from the facility for training purposes.

De Oliveira was a presence on Main Street Hyannis last year, often seen walking with a pack of German Shepherds, sometimes unleashed. Videos of the feat were popular online.

But Barnstable town officials maintained he was running a kennel out of his home illegally, saying he didn’t have permits to run a business at the location. Police searched the home in September, finding 25 dogs on the property. Neighbors had complained about noise and smells coming from the home.

De Oliveira has since moved his kennel and breeding operation off-Cape, to Hanson.
