The town of Dennis – the last “mid-Cape” town – touches both Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound, and is bordered by Yarmouth to the west and Brewster and Harwich to the east.

Dennis was first settled in 1639 as part of the town of Yarmouth and officially separated from it in 1793, naming itself Dennis after the beloved resident minister Reverend Josiah Dennis. Much like other Cape towns, Dennis turned to seafaring and whaling as their major industry but shifted its economic focus to commercial fishing and land-based industries in the late 1800s.

Today, Dennis is a popular seaside resort town that offers a little bit of everything. Dennis combines its traditional New England heritage with modern day conveniences. The villages of East Dennis, Dennis and South Dennis feature scenic historic districts hailing back to whaling days, while tranquil, tree-lined streets meander through Dennisport and West Dennis.

Dennis boasts 16 inviting beaches with the warm waters of Nantucket Sound to the south and the cooler waters of Cape Cod Bay to the north. Family friendly with easy-going surf, soft sand, and expansive tide pools, Chapin, Corporation, and Mayflower Beaches are north of Route 6A on Cape Cod Bay. Chapin Beach is long, with drifting sand dunes marked by the occasional boulder, and has restrooms. Corporation Beach has a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk, lifeguards, a snack bar, restrooms, a children’s play area and soft, smooth sand for all ages to enjoy. Mayflower Beach is a 1,200-foot beach with tide pools to wade through and all amenities and facilities, including an accessible boardwalk.

The town operates its own elementary school before combining with Yarmouth for middle and high school. For grades 4-5, students attend the Wixon School in Dennis and then move on to Yarmouth’s Mattacheese Middle School for grades 6 & 7. Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School in Yarmouth serves students in grades 8 through 12 from both towns. The high school’s Red Wilson Field is the home of the Dennis-Yarmouth Red Sox, a member of the Cape Cod Baseball League, considered by many to be the premier amateur baseball league in the nation.
