YARMOUTH – Officials continue to work on a budget for the next fiscal year for the Dennis-Yarmouth Regional School District.
An early draft of the budget will be discussed at a school committee meeting on January 25.
The school committee has taken a first look at the needs and wants of school administrators, according to Brian Carey, the chairman of the Dennis-Yarmouth School Committee.
“It’s something that we feel as a school committee needs to be looked at,” said Carey. “We need to look at what is coming down the road, what they feel is important to them to make their schools successful for all the students that they serve.”
Carey said getting closer to a finalized budget happens after hearing from the state.
“A lot of things that affect this is the state numbers,” he said. “We don’t get a lot of what the state is thinking until later on. So that is another part of the puzzle.”
The regional school budget has caused a lot of tension over the years between Dennis and Yarmouth.
Carey said the school committee will be making presentations to both towns finance committees and boards of selectmen to make their case for the budget.
“It’s important to always work with our member towns and show them what our needs are and work with them,” Carey said.
The first town meeting of the towns is in Dennis on May 3 and Carey said the final budget needs to be ready 45 days prior.
Carey said an initial vote will be taken at the January 25 meeting and he expects a budget to be finalized sometime in February.
