BARNSTABLE – Several members of the Cape Cod Veterans group will be heading down to the Walter Reed Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, on Thursday to provide a special meal for more than 200 wounded veterans.

Vietnam War-era veteran Terry Clen, of Dennis, says the money for the meal comes from fundraisers held across the Cape over the last year.

“We are bringing almost $3,000 in donations down to them to hand to the Walter Reed Society,” he said. “Plus we are paying for the food and all the food there goes to the family members.”

Clen says the goal is to honor the servicemen and women for the sacrifice they have made which include lost limbs, sight and brain function.

The Dennis veteran said the event, which is co-sponsored by the USO, is always well received.

“It’s very emotional and they love it when we come down,” Clen said. “They look forward to it when we come down every year from Cape Cod.”

All the money raised by Cape Cod Veterans goes directly to assisting veterans who have been wounded in the line of duty.

Clen said the lack of support that veterans received during the 1970s, when he was on active duty, is a reason why he is so passionate about helping those who serve.
