PLYMOUTH – A Plymouth lawmaker is taking a wait and see approach to the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Plant, after the Nuclear Regulatory Commission placed the plant under additional oversight.
Plymouth and Barnstable State Senator Vinny deMacedo has asked to meet with NRC officials about the new sanctions.
“This is a very complicated industry, very technical and I’m not a nuclear engineer. We have to defer to the professionals. The fact that they’ve done this shows you that they’re paying attention and they’re watching, and that’s what we want,” said deMacedo.
The lawmaker says he’s talked with colleagues and state officials about the issues at the plant.
NRC officials said continued safety issues at Pilgrim could eventually lead to a shutdown of the plant.
deMacedo did say that he welcomes additional oversight for Pilgrim.
