Red Raider Tennis Teams Sweep Nauset Warriors

HYANNIS – The Barnstable High boys’ tennis team made quick business of the visiting Nauset High boys Monday afternoon at home, 5-0, while the Red Raider girls picked up a key non-league win on the road versus their Warrior hosts, 4-1.

The Barnstable boys did not lose a set or even allow a single point and they did that while number one singles’ player Sonny Bisazza was at home nursing the flu. The entire match took just over an hour to complete. Nauset was also without its number one singles player.

Barnstable number two singles player Tyler Shibles moved up to the number one slot and he dispatched Nauset’s Keenyn Pombo, 6-0, 6-0, and every score thereafter at number two and three singles, as well as numbers one and two doubles was replicated in like fashion.

“There’s really no difference between Shibles and Bisazza,” said Nauset head coach Brendan Guttman. “They’re like one and the same player. Barnstable’s at a different level altogether.”

Red Raider sophomore Max Francis moved up from his usual slot at number three singles to the number two slot and defeated Lane Bohman, 6-0, 6-0, and Jackson Burbic got his first varsity start this season and made the most of it. Burbic defeated Nauset’s Michael Sanborn, 6-0, 6-0.

In number one doubles, Cooper Hesse and Daniel Dettinger-Klemm took their match with Ethan “Big Red” Ladue and John McLoughlin, 6-0, 6-0, followed by Cooper Blaze and Donnie Brodd over Ben Parkington and Mike Walsh, 6-0, 6-0.

Barnstable remains undefeated at 5-0 on the season while Nauset falls to 1-2. The Red Raiders next face Bridgewater-Raynham on Thursday (April 16) while Nauset faces Martha’s Vineyard at home on Wednesday (April 15).

Nauset Regional High senior co-captain Allie Dadoly defeated Barnstable High’s stalwart Katie Tynan at number one singles Monday afternoon in North Eastham, but the visiting Red Raiders took home the team victory, 4-1, and thus handed the Nauset girls’ tennis team their first loss of the season.

Both Barnstable and Nauset are 3-1 on the season.

“(There were some) great individual efforts today,” Barnstable head coach Lou Giglio said. “Nauset has a solid team.”

Dadoly defeated Tynan in what could only be deemed a true number one singles tennis battle, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), but the Red Raiders Lauren Persson came in at number two singles and delivered a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Nika Dadoly.

At number three singles, Barnstable’s Caroline Young defeated Haley Navarro in yet another net battle, 7-6 (7-3), then fell to Navarro 6-4, but then prevailed in a tiebreaker set, 10-5.

Number one doubles was equally contentious as Barnstable’s Taya Berler and Michaela Cornwall combined efforts to defeat senior co-captains Anna Godshalk and Haley Benz, 6-1, 7-5, followed by another Red Raider win at number two doubles. Angelique Gray and Jenna Davis defeated Nauset’s Taylor Wilkins and Isabel Pelligrini, 6-2, 6-2.

The Barnstable girls next face Bridgewater-Raynham Wednesday on the road while Nauset hopes to get its mojo back at Marshfield on Thursday (April 16).
