BREWSTER – Brewster Police report that on Tuesday, Officer Alden Childs was presented with a letter of commendation stemming from his actions in a case on September 5th.
Officer Childs was dispatched to a report of a car vs. pedestrian hit and run. Upon arrival, he realized that he was dealing with a serious domestic assault & battery, where the victim had jumped out of the assailant’s vehicle and the assailant fled the area. It was learned that the suspect had recently purchased an airsoft style gun and wanted to use it to force a police officer to shoot him, while the victim was forced to watch. Officer Childs was able to make contact with the suspect via telephone. At the time he was in the Sagamore area and admitted his desire to die via a violent encounter with police. Officer Childs spent an hour on the phone with the party eventually convincing him to surrender. He was taken into custody without incident by officers from the Dennis Police Department while Officer Childs was talking him through following the officers’ commands. A black airsoft gun was recovered, and the suspect was held over the weekend and arraigned yesterday at Orleans District Court on a litany of charges stemming from the assault & battery that had occurred.
As a result of Officer Childs’ calming presence and negotiating skills, a potentially perilous situation was resolved without further harm to the suspect, officers or members of the public.
