HYANNIS – The town of Barnstable will hold its official opening tomorrow for a new playground at Veterans Beach Park. The playground was constructed using a $200,000 state grant from the Gateway Cities fund.
The grant paid for playground equipment. The project also included moving a driveway that went between the playground and the picnicking area.
Barnstable Town Manager Thomas Lynch said the work on the playground took place over the late winter and spring months.
“Our target date was to open for Memorial Day,” he said. The town met that date, having the playground inspected and taking the fence away on Memorial Day, so that children could use the playground.
He said moving the road was an important part of the project. “Taking that road out greatly improved the safety for children who would leave the family gathering for the playground area,” he said.
The official opening is Friday at 5 p.m.
