WELLFLEET – Residents on the Outer Cape can dispose of their unwanted firearms starting tomorrow.

Outer Cape police departments are participating in a voluntary gun buyback program. This is the the third year of the program.

“If we get one gun out of the streets or out of someone’s home, we don’t have to worry about somebody breaking in, stealing it, or anything happening where someone can get hurt by it,” said Wellfleet police chief Ron Fisette.

People who turn in a gun will receive a gift certificate from a local business with one gift card given per family. Any unused gift cards, gift certificates, and/or goods donated will be reserved for a future gun turn-in program or returned to the donor upon request.

Gift cards come from the following businesses: Shaw’s Market; Stop & Shop; Main Street Books, Orleans; True Value Hardware, Orleans; Bird Watcher’s General Store, Orleans; Willy’s Gym, Eastham; Hole In-One Donut Shop, Eastham; Fairway Restaurant, Eastham; Wellfleet’s Farmers Market, Wellfleet; Wellfleet Marketplace, Wellfleet; Atlantic Spice Company, Truro; Conwell Lumber, Provincetown; and Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch, Provincetown.

The program was launched in response to the Sandy Hook shooting.

Fisette said, “We anticipate that most guns turned in will likely come from “next of kin,” persons who have inherited guns from a family member. Each unwanted gun turned in is valuable towards our public safety efforts.”

Guns collected during this program will be delivered to the Massachusetts State Police and destroyed.

“We will attempt to identify any antique, rare, or highly collectible guns and inform the person that it may have potential value. Area merchants may be able to help determine the value of the collectible gun,” he said.

Turn in times when people can bring guns to their local police department are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Here is the schedule of police departments open for gun drop off: Saturday, May 9, Provincetown PD; Sunday, May 10, Truro PD; Monday, May 11 Wellfleet PD; Tuesday, May 12 Eastham PD; Wednesday, May 13 Wellfleet PD; Thursday, May 14, Orleans PD; Friday, May 15, Orleans PD; Saturday, May 16, Eastham PD; Sunday May 17, Truro PD; and Monday, May 18, Provincetown PD.
