Falmouth to Contemplate Ban on Pot Shops Opening in Town

FALMOUTH – Falmouth Selectmen are considering banning recreational marijuana shops from opening, despite last November’s statewide vote legalizing recreational use of the drug.

A question could be put on the May annual election ballot banning the shops from opening in town.

In the November 8th election, Falmouth voters were against Question 4, which called for the legalization for recreational marijuana, 52 percent to 48 percent.

The new law allows towns to ban pot retailers with a town-wide vote.

“We’re going to ask the question again because that’s what the law says, but in May, put a referendum question on saying alright, we need to make a decision as to whether we really do want retail stores in Falmouth or not,” said Selectman Doug Jones.

The legislation allows Massachusetts residents to possess up to 10 ounces of marijuana at home and up to one ounce in public.

“I think the voters did speak, they spoke very clearly that they didn’t want it and I think that we should probably give them that opportunity to speak again,” said Falmouth Police Chief Ed Dunne.
