Winter Parking Policy Changes for Falmouth Heights, Woods Hole

FALMOUTH – Selectmen in Falmouth are changing their winter parking policy for Falmouth Heights and Woods Hole.

Last month, Selectmen voted to make the first 30 minutes free before the usual rate of 25 cents for every 15 minutes kicks in.

In previous years, the parking during the winter was free for three hours.

“Even though meters, for this town, weren’t purchased to create revenue they have to support themselves,” said Police Chief Ed Dunne.

The smart meters, which were installed in September 2016, have monthly fees for sensors and cellular capabilities.

“For the months of December, January, February and March, which you allowed for free parking during those three hours, there was a loss of $33,000,” Dunne told selectmen.

Selectmen did not take any action to reduce the maximum parking time from three hours, despite Dunne saying the limit is being abused.

Dunne said many people are parking all day and using the ferries to the island and only paying $13. The cost is $3 for the three-hour limit and then a $10 ticket.
