NANTUCKET – Nantucket Police report that on Tuesday at approximately 11:00 a.m. Sgt. Thomas Clinger and Det. Michael Cook were conducting a narcotics investigation in the mid-island area. Police say the incident became violent when the subject of the investigation, Jiahda Wiggins, 28, of New Bedford, MA, allegedly drove her vehicle directly at Det. Cook while refusing to stop. Wiggins then reportedly attempted to ram the detective’s police cruiser at a high rate of speed. Wiggins continued to drive recklessly in the Backus Lane area when she exited her vehicle behind the ice skating rink and fled toward First Way.
A perimeter was established in the area by members of the Nantucket Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, and Massachusetts Environmental Police. After an extensive search, Wiggins was apprehended after a foot chase and brief struggle by Sgt. Brendan Coakley and Ofc. Christopher Kelly. While being placed under arrest, Wiggins resisted and kicked one of the officers.
Wiggins was charged with distributing a Class A substance (heroin), distributing a Class B substance (crack cocaine), Assault with a dangerous weapon (motor vehicle), operating without a license, speeding, operating recklessly to endanger, failing to stop for police, arrest warrant out of Fall River court, fugitive from justice (out of Sedgewick County Sheriff, Wichita, KS for theft and probation violations), assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest.
Wiggins was held on the default warrant and $5,000 bail on the new charges pending arraignment Wednesday in Nantucket District Court.
