Who would have thought that spying some grass through the snow on your lawn would be so thrilling? That’s the silver lining of a long, hard winter—appreciating the chirping birds, the longer days…all those small signs of spring. Before we know it, we will be planting seeds and going on picnics. But we still have a lot of melting to do first. So while we wait for that to happen, let’s find some fun things to do. I’ve found an eclectic bunch of activities, and hopefully there’s something for everyone!

Music

I know I’ve mentioned this a few times, but I think it’s such a cool event that deserves attention, I’m going to mention it again. This Sunday is the Classical Open Mic. I keep mentioning it because I think it would be great to see it succeed, there’s nothing else like it around. This Sunday, March 15, at 3 p.m. at First Parish Brewster, give it a try! The event is free, and is hosted by Cape Cod Symphony Soloist winner, clarinetist, Monika Woods. If you want to sign up, get there ar 2:45. First Parish is located at 1969 Main Street, Brewster.

Don’t forget that the Chandler Travis Philharmonic will be at the Cotuit Center for the Arts this Saturday night at 7:30. Tickets will be going quickly, so get online or over to the box office to get yours. To shop online go to cotuitcenterforthearts.org. You know you want to go to find out the meaning behind the new album title, “Bocce and Bourbon.”

Music and Film

This Saturday night, March 14, from 7:30-10:30, the Wellfleet Preservation Hall ( 335 Main Street, Wellfleet) is showing the amazing classic film about Talking Heads, “Stop Making Sense.” Filmed in 1984, this is one of the best rock and roll movies ever made. As one can imagine, anything featuring this band is going to be anything but pedestrian. It’s a work of art. Tickets are $10, and there will be a cash bar. It will be shown on their large screen, and is going to be a fantastic way to spend a Saturday evening in March.

Comedy Show

There’s nothing better than being able to get out and know you are giving to a very worthwhile cause. On Friday night, March 13, at the Coonamesset Inn, they are hosting A Night of Comedy to raise money for the Wings for Falmouth Families, a fund that provides help for families in need during a medical crisis, or tragic event. The featured comedian is Graig Murphy, with comedian Mike Whitman opening for him. The host for the evening will be Falmouth Police Chief, Edward Dunne. Tickets are $40 and can be purchased online at wingsforfalmouth.org. Coonamesset is located at 311 Gifford Street, Falmouth.

Kids

The Lego Club at the Brewster Ladies Library is meeting this Saturday at 11 a.m. This is a club for kids four-years-old and up, and is a chance for kids to get out, and be with other kids who are passionate about building with Legos too. And it’s free! The library is at 1822 Main Street, Brewster.

Lecture

We don’t have to look farther than our recent spate of storms to know something is afoot with our climate. The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History is hosting an important talk given by Woods Hole Research Center scientist emeritus, Tom Stone. Mr. Stone After discussing general aspects of climate change, Mr. Stone will present the three main problems facing Cape Cod and the Islands due to ongoing climate change These issues are sea level rise, increased number of storms, and something most of us don’t know about, ocean acidification. He will speak to the history of theses issues, their likely future consequences, as well as what we can do to help with local groups and organizations to help solve these problems. The talk is free with admission to the museum. The talk is at 1 p.m. For more information go to ccmnh.org. The museum is at 869 Route 6A, Brewster.

Film

If you find yourself out in Provincetown on Thursday, you might want to stay in town for the evening to go to the WORM film series’ showing of “The Man Who Knew Too Much,” the classic, amazing 1934 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, starring Peter Lorre. It’s a great way to see a movie in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. The show is at 7:30 p.m. and there is a suggested donation of $5. There is also free popcorn, courtesy of the Provincetown Inn, and wine and sodas from Yardarm Liquors. WOMR is located at 494 Commercial Street in Provincetown.
