Striped bass
HYANNIS – The Commonwealth has reduced the catch limit for striped bass for 2015.
Last year recreational fisherman were able to take home two fish per day that were 28 inches or larger.
That number has been reduced to one this year.
Amy Wrightson, the owner of Sports Port, a Hyannis bait shop and fishing gear store on West Main Street, is embracing the new limit.
“I think it’s a good move,” Wrightson said. “You want the fish to stay strong in their numbers.”
Wrightson does not believe recreational fisherman need more than one fish per day.
“Frankly, you don’t need that much striped bass to take home for dinner,” she said.
Wrightson has heard a mixed reaction from customers.
“There are some people who are disappointed,” she said. “And I think there are some people that share my sentiment where it’s not a huge deal.”
Wrightson is not too worried that the reduced limit will have an economic effect on the Cape.
“I don’t think it’s going to deter people from coming to the Cape if they are coming from off Cape or going out fishing for the day because they can’t keep two,” Wrightson said.
Wrightson said she hopes the new regulations will not hurt her business as most of her customers are recreational fisherman who fish for striped bass and bluefish.
