County Officials Ask State For Snow-Moving Equipment

more streetBARNSTABLE – Cape officials are looking to the state for more snow-moving equipment as the region attempts to dig out from a blizzard of historic proportions.

“I think the biggest issue is the dig out. We’re trying to assist local departments with securing more equipment to help clear the roads,” said Kevin Morley, Public Information Officer for the Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee.

Getting that large equipment may be a challenge, though.

“The eastern half of the state is buried, so equipment is kind of scarce right now,” Morley said.

The area on the Cape needing the most snow removal help is Hyannis, he said.

“Roadways have been heavily impacted not only by the snow itself but by vehicles that have become trapped, so that will be the focal point,” he said.

The main focus for the past two days of the Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee has been running the region’s emergency shelter system, Morley said.

Last night, 127 people spend the night in the Cape’s six shelters in Falmouth, Sandwich, Barnstable, Yarmouth, Harwich and Eastham.

At 10 o’clock this morning, officials will decide whether to keep the shelters open for another night.
