Fishermen Historian to Speak at Whaling Museum on Nantucket

fishing boatNANTUCKET – The history of fishermen in this region of the state is rich and that will be the top of a special guest lecture from historian Jonathan Olly that will be hosted by the Nantucket Historical Association.

The lecture, titled “New England’s Mystic Fisherman,” will be held on Saturday, May 30, at the Whaling Museum on Broad Street at 6 p.m.

Olly is a New England-based public historian who was born and raised in Central Massachusetts and studied American history at University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and focused on maritime history and tourism in New England while completing a PhD at Brown University.

Olly resides in Rhode Island where he is a fellow at the Newport Restoration Foundation.

He will share stories of New England fishermen and how they are memorialized by New England communities.

Olly will also discuss how these stories affect the public’s imagination and tourism in certain maritime communities.

“The Nantucket Historical Association is excited to welcome Jonathan Olly to the Whaling Museum to share his insights into how fishermen have been perceived throughout history,” said Marjan Shirzad, NHA Director of Visitor Experience. “Olly is an expert in maritime history and his exploration of how New England’s fishermen have defined and portrayed themselves over time promises to be a fascinating lecture.”

Tickets are free for current Nantucket Historical Association members and $10 per person for the general public.
