BREWSTER – It’s Tim Whelan’s first day on the job as state representative for the First Barnstable District.

The governor’s inauguration was first on the agenda for Whelan. Then it is a meeting with the Republican leadership to talk about committee appointments.

Whelan said he hopes he will be assigned to committees that match his expertise, including public safety, since he served for most of his career in law enforcement.

Other priorities, he said are the opiate abuse epidemic, school funding, economic development and issues with wastewater on the Cape.

Whelan said he expects to get his office assignment, email address and other necessities to start work next week.

But Whelan said he already has case files open for constituent issues.

Whelan is one of two new members of the Cape’s legislative delegation. The other is Plymouth & Barnstable District State Senator Vinny deMacedo, who was elected to the seat of former State Senate President Therese Murray, who did not run for relection.
