Dolphin Nine Foil Marshfield with McCaffrey Mound Effort

SOUTH YARMOUTH – Senior backstop Mike Dunn and first baseman Trevor Allen each belted home runs and Gandin McCaffrey went the distance on the mound as the Dennis-Yarmouth baseball team clinched a postseason berth with a 7-2 win over Marshfield High Tuesday afternoon at Merrill “Red” Wilson Field.

McCaffrey went the distance as allowed just one earned run with both runs allowed in the first inning before he settled down to throw six shutout frames the rest of the way. McCaffrey struck out three, walked four and allowed four hits in his seven innings of hard work.

The senior righty was aided by a two run bomb from Allen in the first after Dunn had walked, and then it was Dunn’s turn in the second inning when he hammered a two-out, two-run dinger for the only lead his battery-mate would need to seal the deal.

The Dolphins made it 5-2 in the third frame after Ben Chapasko led off with a double and came home on an error and then added single runs again in the fifth and seventh frames (D-Y played as the visitor in this affair, due to continued construction of Marshfield High’s baseball field).

McCaffrey was the recipient of some pretty heady defensive leatherwork from his fellow Dolphins, in particular junior shortstop Mike Knell and hot corner man Matt Scruggs.

Allen went 2-5 on the day with three RBI and Knell raked a pair of doubles to go 2-3. Chapasko also rapped out a pair of doubles and went 2-4 and centerfielder Drew Cochran made it back-to-back days of two hits (2-4).

Dennis-Yarmouth is now 10-5 on the season and still in the hunt in the Atlantic Coast League with Tuesday’s key win over the Rams. On Friday, May 15, the Dolphins head to East Sandwich to face the host Sandwich Blue Knights in what promises to be a barnburner.

“We’re seeing the ball well and we’re hitting the ball well right now,” first-year head coach J.D. Stone said.
