BUZZARDS BAY – In a match-up at Clean Harbors Stadium that was well-contested and close throughout, visiting Salem State nevertheless took an early lead in the first half and would not relinquish it to the hard-fighting Buccaneers as the hosts fell to the Vikings, 13-8.
Massachusetts Maritime freshman midfielder and team-leading point-producer Stephanie Hunt (Brookfield, CT) scored four goals and had an assist while sophomore midfielder Dahlia Seggelin (Sharon) netted a hat trick to pace the Buccaneers’ offense. The Buccaneers are now 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the Massachusetts.
Hunt is tied for the team lead in goals scored with 18 but leads in assists with 11 for 29 points thus far on the season. Mashpee High School graduate Brianna Pingree scored the Buccaneers’ sole other tally on the day. Pingree is the second-leading scorer for the Bucs this season with 18 goals and three assists.
It took nearly six minutes into the first half before either team scored as Salem State drew first blood at the 24:24 mark with a goal from Courtney Smith that made it 1-0, Vikings.
Maritime’s Seggelin tied things up at 1-1 with her sixth goal of the season exactly two minutes later on a feed from Hunt at the 22:24 mark.
Salem State capitalized on a man-up opportunity when Mass. Maritime was assessed an illegal body check penalty at 19:40 and was afforded a free position shot. Salem State’s Kelsey Russell made the shot count with her 23rd goal of the season for a 2-1 lead.
The Vikings would not relinquish the lead again even though the Buccaneers came to within one score, twice, and took a 6-3 lead into the intermission.
Salem State’s Courtney Smith and Kelsey Russell each had four goals while Katie Hart had a hat trick and two assists. Russell also had two assists and was the game’s high scorer. The Vikings are now 6-6 overall and are deadlocked with Mass. Maritime at 1-3 in conference play.
Sophomore Chyenne Jackson (Peabody) picked up the win in goal for Salem State with a five-save effort, while freshman Mikayla Correia (Dartmouth) made 10 stops in the setback for Massachusetts Maritime. The Vikings outshot the Buccaneers by a 25-20 margin and won 15 of the 22 draw controls for the contest.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts Elms in a non-league outing on Thursday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m., while Salem State entertains Bridgewater State in a MASCAC match-up on Saturday in Salem at 5:30 pm.
