FALMOUTH – Falmouth Selectmen voted last night to send a letter to the Cape Cod Commission saying they are against the project to build a Marriott Hotel on Main Street.
Selectmen took the unanimous vote in front of a standing-room-only crowd opposed to the 65,000-square-foot, 110-room hotel.
Alison Leschen, one of the neighbors who live on Lantern Lane abutting the proposed hotel site, said she was pleased with the vote.
“I think that the selectmen really responded to the many, many, many emails that they got from concerned citizens, the over 550 signatures collected on a petition opposing this development,” Leschen said. “Now we just have to hope that the Cape Cod Commission listens to the town that this will most affect.”
Leschen said the development would change the character of the town.
“This will set a precedent that will make us Anywhere, USA. If this hotel gets built, it’s the beginning of the end of Falmouth as a charming and unique village,” she said.
The Cape Cod Commission meets Thursday at 3 p.m. and is expected to vote on the development at that meeting. The Cape Cod Commission subcommittee tasked with reviewing the development for the commission voted in favor of it.
Falmouth Selectman Mary (Pat) Flynn, who served on the subcommittee in her role as county commissioner, was the sole vote against the project on the subcommittee.
Flynn recused herself from last night’s vote since she sits on the commission and will need to vote on the project Thursday.
