SOUTH YARMOUTH – It’s a tradition many servicemen and women are familiar with: if there are two or more marines present on November 10th, they must celebrate the Marine Corps birthday.
Jerry O’Connell has organized an event this week when multiple marines, veterans and the public can celebrate.
On Thursday, the first Marine Corps Birthday Ball will take place at 6 p.m. at the Cape Cod Irish Village.
O’Connell said part of the reason he decided to organize the ball was that there is an enormous sense of respect for the marines on Cape Cod.
“There’s a ceremony which is pretty marine-centric, but you don’t have to be a member of the armed forces, anyone can come,” he said.
There will be a cake-cutting honoring both the youngest and oldest marine present, as well as live entertainment by Terry Brennan.
Rooms are available for attendees such that they do not have to drive home following the event. Tickets are available for purchase on Eventbrite under “Cape Cod Marine Corps Birthday Ball.”
The tickets each cost $47.
