ORLEANS – It’s back to school season, but the Homeless Prevention Council is still looking for donations to their 16th Annual “Backpack to School” program.
The Council provides school supplies to local families in the lower and outer Cape who are in need and last year, served 171 children from 81 local families from Kindergarten to 12th grade.
“If we fill the backpacks and get them ready for school, they still have that money to pay their rent, to pay their heat, to pay the electricity, to keep the family moving forward,” said Maureen Linehan with the Council.
The organization is accepting new donations through September, including pencils, pens, erasers, highlighters, sharpeners, subject dividers and notebooks.
“We’re able to get them new backpacks and new supplies so that they can start off school just like the other kids with everything they need,” said Linehan.
Those looking to monetary donation can mail or drop off their donation, specifying “Backpack” to the Council’s office at 14 Old Tote Road in Orleans.
People can also donate online at hpccapecod.org.
