FALMOUTH – Police Chief Ed Dunne said the second and final Opioid Coalition of Falmouth organized solid plans for tackling the issue of opioid abuse.

“We have a lot of commitment from the community,” the Chief said. “That’s what this is all about, bringing them together and coming up with some out-of-the-box ideas.”

Dunne said the issue is particularly timely: 128 overdoses occurred in the town during the past year, with 9 resulting in deaths.

Those ideas were formulated into full-fledged plans in the time between the last forum in January and this last one at the start of the month.

The forum, held at the Seacrest Resort, brought treatment and medical professionals, pharmacists, prosecutors, and local law enforcement officials together to form teams that will be responsible for setting their own plans into action in the coming months.

The “education” team already has plans to push drug education in Falmouth school curriculums.

Other initiatives include providing Narcotics Anonymous meetings in schools and the continual encouragement of regional health professionals not to over-prescribe legal narcotics.
