Meg Mayo-Brown will become the next Superintendent of Schools in Barnstable after finalizing a contract with the school committee.

BARNSTABLE – The Cape’s largest school system officially has a new superintendent.

The Barnstable School Committee finalized a contract with Fall River Superintendent Meg Mayo-Brown Wednesday night. The two sides came to terms on a four year contract with an annual salary of $200,000.

“There was an interest on both sides in showing a commitment to Barnstable,” said School Committee Chairwoman Margeaux Weber. “That was one of the concerns expressed over and over in our forums with the community.”

“She wants to be in Barnstable, she wants to advance her career in order to better herself and better our district,” Weber said

$200,000 was the top of the salary range for the position.

The vote was unanimous.

“Meg Mayo-Brown has a record in Fall River of turning failing schools around, not that she faces the same situation here in Barnstable at all,” said Weber. “Her experience dealing with that situation can only bolster our performance.”

Barnstable received a level two designation from the state in their yearly school performance rankings, joining all other districts on Cape Cod in that category, with the exception of Sturgis (level one), and Dennis-Yarmouth (level three).

Mayo-Brown had been in contract negotiations with the Fall River School Committee since the summer, but the two sides were unable to come to an agreement. The starting salary at the beginning of her contract in 2012 was $170,000.

The School Committee chose Mayo-Brown in a 3-2 vote last week. Holliston Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Sara Ahern and Wilmington Public Schools Assistant Superintendent Kathleen Burnham were the other finalists.

Former Superintendent Dr. Mary Czajkowski left Barnstable at the end of June to become the Superintendent of Schools in Lexington. Czajkowski had been on the job in Barnstable for four years.

Mayo-Brown will start on July 1. School attorney William Butler has been serving as interim superintendent.

The contract agreement marks the culmination of a four month search process. Officials received 19 applications for the job in total.
