BREWSTER – A local conservation group is working to educate homeowners on how environmentally friendly lawn care can help preserve the Cape’s ponds.
According to the Brewster Ponds Coalition, the health of the region’s ponds are vital to the Cape’s ecology and water quality, and those living near ponds need to be aware of how the care of their own properties can affect nearby ponds.
On Saturday, May 16 at 10 a.m., the coalition will present an educational program at the Brewster Ladies Library entitled “Pond Friendly Landscaping.”
The session is geared to give homeowners tips on how to create landscaping to beautify their property, all while helping to reduce pollutants from entering ponds.
Brewster Ponds Coalition President Karen Malkus-Benjamin said preventing polluted stormwater from going down a storm drains is important, and allowing rainwater to filter through native plants helps protect water quality.
Presenters will include Sue Phelan, founder and director of the non-profit GreenCape, and Barbara Conolly, a landscaping professional.
Homeowners will learn gardening techniques, how to build a rain garden to help minimize runoff, and other ways to protect water quality.
