HYANNIS – Fast food restaurant chain Chick-fil-A has moved another step closer to opening a location on Cape Cod.
A lawyer for the chicken chain appeared Thursday morning before Barnstable’s Site Plan Review Committee to discuss their latest plans.
The company secured a zoning amendment earlier this year from the Barnstable Town Council that would allow a drive-thru on property near the Cape Cod Mall at the intersection of Enterprise Road.
“The existing parking lot that covers virtually the whole site currently would be removed. There would be a restaurant constructed of a little over 5,000 square feet,” said Attorney Michael Ford, who represents the chain on Cape Cod.
The restaurant would have 118 indoor seats and 38 seasonal outdoor seats.
“This project would require a special permit and therefore a public hearing before the Zoning Board of Appeals here in town. In addition to that, because the property is covered by a Development or Regional Impact permit from the Cape Cod Commission, we will also need to obtain the commission’s approval,” Ford told the board.
The site plan review committee requested some additional information and continued the hearing while Chick-fil-A continues moving the proposal through other town committees.
The Atlanta-based chain came under scrutiny in 2012 after its president made comments in favor of traditional marriage, and late Boston Mayor Tom Menino vowed to block any effort to open a location in the city.
The chain has also encountered opposition in other cities around the country since the 2012 comments. So far, there has been no organized opposition to the restaurant coming to Cape Cod.
Chick-fil-A currently has four locations in Massachusetts.
