MARTHA’S VINEYARD – A long-planned trip by a group of local students and teachers to attend a United Nations summit on climate change in Paris has been canceled in the wake of the recent terrorist attacks.
Bob Moore, the director of the Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School, called off the trip due to safety concerns, with the departure date approaching on December 3.
“We spoke to the students about it and they were as sad as we were but they understood, and one of the students said, “Bob, you’re not cancelling this trip, the world is cancelling this trip for us,” said Moore.
The group of students and teachers raised money for months, studied the issues that were going to come up at the summit and were planning to indulge in the French culture for their 10 day trip.
Moore said that the students’ awareness and knowledge of climate change from their research ahead of the Paris trip is just as important.
“We hope to continue that work, maybe we can’t replicate Paris, but maybe we can come up with an alternative program to help them continue their studies, research and work in this area over the next six months,” said Moore.
A group of students from the school traveled to New York City in September to attend the People’s Climate March.
Moore hopes that students can take away something from the school’s cancellation of the trip.
“My hope is that it was a learning experience for the students,” said Moore. “Being on Martha’s Vineyard and seeing how world events can impact their lives in such a way, I think is a learning experience for them and I think they’ll take it as they move forward in their lives.”
