CENTERVILLE- Members of the Cape Cod MSPCA celebrated the grand opening of their new multi-use adoption facility in Centerville yesterday.
“The old building was really truly an animal shelter, that’s really all we could do in there due to the size, and the space,” said Cape Cod MSPCA Director Mary Sarah Fairweather.
“Now we can house homeless animals in a beautiful, open, bright, and airy place.”
The new building, officially being named the ‘Marjorie and John McGraw Family Animal Resource & Adoption Center’ can now hold upwards of 200 animals at any one time, and will include space for medical & behavioral evaluations, a modern spay/neuter treatment ward, and a multi-purpose training/function room.
A common miss-conception that the public has is that the MSPCA is only meant to receive, and care, for pets that individuals think they can no-longer care for.
On the contrary, Fairweather says that the MSPCA is more than willing to help and keep that pet in a forever home, and will provide the services to make that happen.
“The first question that we ask them is ‘Is there anything that we can do to help you keep your pet?’ Now that be something as simple as a microchip, or a rabies vaccination, or maybe spay/neuter surgery, or maybe it’s basic dog training. Maybe their dog is reactive. We are here to provide resources to them so that they can keep their pet. If we have exhausted all options for them and they can no-longer keep their pet, then of course their pet is welcomed to come to us,” said Fairweather.
As for the old facility located next door to the new 10,000 sq. ft. building, officials say that plans are in the works to tear the structure down by July 4th. That space will then be turned into additional parking as well as a open pet friendly play area.
