BOURNE – On Saturday, May 28, Operation Flags for Vets will be planting flags on the graves at the Massachusetts National Veterans Cemetery in Bourne, and the organization is looking for volunteers to take part in the moving tribute.
The tradition began in 2011 by Paul Monti. Monti’s son Jared was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2006, awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously, and is buried at the cemetery and Monti says the tribute began as a tribute to his hero son.
“It is a tribute to him, but it’s really a tribute to all those that have served our country especially on this Memorial Day where we celebrate those who gave their lives for their country,” Monti said.
The event will begin with a short ceremony at 10 a.m., taking place at the flag pole at the end of the cemetery’s Avenue of Flags.
Following the ceremony, volunteers will plant 66,000 flags, and anyone with a patriotic spirit is encouraged to attend.
Volunteers are reminded to bring a long-shanked screwdriver to aid in the flag planting.
