SANDWICH – The deadline for Massachusetts residents to register to vote or change party affiliation for the upcoming Presidential Primary is February 10th at 8 p.m.
Voters can register as unenrolled or in one of the four official political parties recognized by the state which are Democratic, Republican, Green-Rainbow and United Independent.
Sandwich Town Clerk Taylor White said anyone looking to cast a ballot on March 1 should check to make sure they are registered to vote and are affiliated with the correct party.
“If you are enrolled in one of those four parties you will be required to take that party’s ballot,” White said. “If you are unenrolled, which is commonly referred to as independent in popular culture, you will be able to choose which party ballot you want.”
Unlike past primary elections unenrolled voters do not need to change their affiliation to participate.
“Voters should not be afraid to go and vote in a primary if they are unenrolled because they will remain unenrolled,” White said. “Although they will just pick a ballot to vote on they will not have to switch back to unenrolled after the election.”
Residents who are unsure if they are registered to vote or what affiliation they are can check at their town clerk’s office or online at the Secretary of State’s website.

White also reminds Sandwich residents of the importance of returning the Annual Town Census and that failing to do so may result in a voter’s status changing to inactive.
