SANDWICH – The Sandwich Board of Selectmen voted this week to recognize the service of a local military veteran by naming the bridge over Scorton Creek in his honor.
U.S. Navy Commander Francis T. Williams’ widow Janice Tupper Williams appeared before the board to discuss her husband’s years of service beginning with his time in Vietnam and including tours in Italy and Afghanistan.
Commander Williams died at Bethesda National Naval Medical Center in 2013 from brain cancer – likely the result of exposure to Agent Orange during his time overseas.
The motion received support from the Sandwich Historical Commission, which wrote a letter to the selectmen.
“The Sandwich Historical Commission gives our support to Ms. Williams’ endeavor to name the Scorton Creek bridge after her husband,” historical commission chairman Lisa Hassler wrote, “We believe that it is important to memorialize those who have served so that their sacrifice will not be forgotten by future generations.”
Though selectmen did consider expanding the naming to cover other veterans as well, the decision to honor Williams was ultimately unanimous.
