CHATHAM – Cape Abilities is joining with other nonprofits and municipalities on Cape Cod to “Light It Up Blue,” an autism awareness event that takes place during the month of April.
Throughout the month, Cape Abilities will work to show support for the growing numbers of individuals diagnosed with autism each year.
“We are excited to bring awareness to this very important issue,” Glenn Loomis, Administrator of the Life Skills department at Cape Abilities, said, “and we are very happy to have a share in brightening up the days of individuals with autism and their families right here on Cape Cod all month long.”
Events planned for the month include the kick-off of a brand new Sensory Film Series developed in partnership with Chatham Orpheum Theater. The Cape Abilities “Sensory Film Series” will feature 12 free, monthly family-friendly screenings devoted specifically to families affected by Autism Sensory Disorder.
The series occurs on the third Saturday at 10 a.m. of every month and debuts on April 18 during Autism Awareness Month with the screening of “Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs 2.”
Municipalities on Cape Cod are also participating in Light It Up Blue. The town of Barnstable installed a blue light in its lobby to bring awareness to the issue. The Yarmouth Police Department and the town of Yarmouth are celebrating Autism Awareness Month on Cape “to show that these individuals are truly valued in our community for their unique talents and gifts,” according to Yarmouth Deputy Police Chief Steven Xiarhos.
The town of Yarmouth Police, Fire and other town departments, libraries, and town hall will display blue lights to show their support for and help bring awareness to the growing numbers of individuals diagnosed with autism each year.
