Currence Is Pure Money in Win Over Middleboro

MIDDLEBORO — They might be coming up with a nickname any day now for Falmouth Academy point guard Kendall Currence.

Such monikers as “Cool Mama” or “Downtown” come to mind after the sweet-shooting freshman poured in 23 points last night on the road in Falmouth Academy’s 46-36 win over Middleboro.

Even though Middleboro jumped out to an early, 10-7 lead after the first quarter, the visiting Mariners slowly came back to build a 17-16 halftime advantage before kicking it in to high gear in the third quarter. Falmouth Academy outscored Middleboro 17-6 in the third frame and Currence turned it up in the fourth quarter with eight points including a pair of deep three-pointers that proved the difference in the finale.

“We got outhustled early on,” said Falmouth Academy head coach Gus Adams. “But we took it to them in the third quarter.”

The Mariners’ mainstays Eliza Van Voorhis and Taylor Mulhearn added nine and eight points, respectively.

Middleboro’s Jessica Baldassini scored a team-high 13 points, including a pair of three-pointers, while her teammate Lauren Empey had 12 points.

Falmouth Academy is now 11-2 on the season and next faces a huge match-up versus the 10-1 St. John Paul II Lions. The Lions defeated the Mariners last time the two teams met, 41-40, and a win for the Academy could mean at least an eventual share in the Cape & Islands League title. A win for the Lions would almost certainly guarantee a title for head coach Mike Tierney in his first season at the helm. The two match-up Tuesday, Feb.3, at 7:00 pm at the St. Francis Xavier Preparatory School in Hyannis.
