FALMOUTH – Pitching is everything in softball.
Falmouth Clipper junior righty Kathleen Desmond drove that point home Wednesday afternoon, as she struck out 10 from the visiting Vineyarders and walked just one in the season-
opener for both teams. Desmond got the win in the mercy rule-shortened affair as Falmouth won, 15-3 in 4 ½ innings of play. A perennial all-star, Desmond went the distance on the mound and allowed just three runs (two unearned) on four hits.
Falmouth (1-0) picked up three runs in the first inning, three in the second frame, two in the third and seven runs in the fourth inning, albeit largely on walks. All totaled, Falmouth received 15 free passes from the Vineyard’s pitching staff and also reached via the hit batsman three times.
The Clippers got basehits from centerfielder Kat Bresko (1-2, three runs scored), shortstop Kassie Gaudet, catcher Kelly Ferreira, third baseman Andrea Dell’Anno and right fielder Chloe Crago.
Julie Bettencourt picked up a pair of base-knocks for Martha’s Vineyard (0-1), while teammates Mariah Duarte and Emily Turney also reached safely. The Vineyarders scored single runs in the second, third and fifth frames. Turney, the Vineyard leadoff hitter, scored two runs for the islanders and Bettencourt was the sole other run-scorer.
Desmond, a third-year varsity hurler, struck out the side in succession in the fourth inning.
