Falmouth Hockey Girls Take Care of Algonquin in Tourney Opener, Get Rematch with Archies

FALMOUTH – There’s something to be said for efficiency.

The 8th-seeded Falmouth High ice hockey girls were the model of just that last night at the Falmouth Ice Arena, as senior captain Madison Scavotto notched another shutout in the preliminary round of the MIAA Division 2 girls’ hockey tournament.

“It was a good all-around team win,” said head coach Erin Hunt.

Call it: getting the job done.

The Clippers hosted the 25th-seeded Algonquin Regional girls’ team, a team that finished 9-10-1 on the season in stark contrast to the SEMGHL Coastal Division champion Falmouth squad. Now at 16-4-2 on the season, Falmouth sets its eyes ahead to this Saturday (Feb. 28) when it welcomes back Archbishop Williams (15-4-3) in the Division 2 South First Round at 5:00 pm. The game will be hosted by the higher-seeded Clippers at the Falmouth Ice Arena.

Falmouth defeated the tough Archbishop Williams team (seeded 9th) back on February 18, 2-1.

Last night, all Falmouth would need to secure the tournament victory was a first period goal from sophomore forward Shannon Upton who made it 1-0 with just 0:46 remaining in the frame (14:14). Upton’s goal was assisted by fellow sophomore forward Ericka Meissner and senior forward Maddie Haberl.

Neither team scored in the second period.

In the third period, as per her usual minimum tally, freshman phenom Mackenzie Haberl – Maddie Haberl’s little-but-equally-gifted sister – made it 2-0 unassisted at the 9:38 mark. It was five minutes later that the eldest Haberl – Maddie – would garner her second point of the day when she, too, scored unassisted (14:36).

Scavotto made 16 saves for the shutout. Falmouth outshot Algonquin, 46-16.
