HARWICH – Nauset Regional boys’ basketball head coach John McCarthy ran to the nearest CVS after last night’s game against Monomoy and bought himself an industrial-sized tub of Tums.
Well, if that isn’t precisely what the Warriors’ helmsman did, he might as well have after his team battled and clawed its way to victory in its second overtime thriller in as many days.
Thanks to an 8-10 performance at the charity stripe in the overtime frame last night at Monomoy Regional High School, the Warriors defeated their host Sharks, 52-44.
All totaled, Nauset went 16-23 from the line in the game, an effort that likely spelled the difference between ending the regular season on a high note or heading into the tournament saddled with a pair of playoff-atmosphere-type losses.
Nauset had suffered an overtime loss the night before against Bourne, 68-65.
But not last night.
Thanks to 16 points from Andrew Flynn (6-8 from the free throw line), nine points from Razz Green and eight points from Jackson Hill, the Warriors pulled out a win after being tied 40-40 in regulation.
Green, Mike Walsh and Flynn each hit critical three-pointers in the fourth quarter that helped fend off a possible loss to the host Sharks.
The win overshadowed a stellar effort from Monomoy’s Logan DeSouza (15 points) and Chris Ryder (16 points), who combined to stage a remarkable fourth quarter comeback to tie the ball game.
DeSouza buried a pair of fourth quarter treys while Ryder nailed three buckets as the Sharks erased what had been a game-lond lead by the visitors.
The Warriors led by one point, 9-8, after the first quarter, took a 19-13 lead into the halftime intermission and still led 29-23 after the third frame, but the Sharks smelled blood in the water.
DeSouza and Ryder paced the hosts to a 17-11 fourth quarter comeback to tie it at 40-40.
Dalton Nickerson added eight points to the Sharks’ overall effort.
But in the overtime frame, it was Nausetm chiefly, at the line and producing thereby that led to the ultimate victory.
Nauset’s Ethan “Big Red” Ladue added a critical bucket in the final 4:00-minute extra period that also helped stave off any hope by the Sharks of snatching this win away from the 12-8 guests.
Nauset now awaits its postseason seeding on Sunday, while Monomoy concludes its season at 5-15.
