HYANNIS — When senior Kevin Marsh is feeling it, be lucky there’s a game clock.
Marsh buried 28 points last night to pace the St. John Paul II Lions (10-4) to a resounding 75-54 win over the Cape Tech Crusaders (4-10) at the St. Francis Xavier Preparatory School.
Freshman point guard Devan Harrison turned in one of his best perfomances of the season as well, pouring in 15 points while adding six assists and five rebounds.
The Lions qualified for the state tournament with the victory.
Tim Jordan, Harrison and Marsh led the way in the first quarter, all burying three-pointers to get things rolling for the Blue & Gold as the Lions jumped out to a quick 21-14 lead and never looked back. Marsh netted 11 of his 28 points in the first frame.
By halftime, in spite of some pretty nifty downtown shooting from Cape Tech guard Sean Campbell, the Lions built a 41-29 lead. Campbell, who had 13 points on the night, buried all three of his three-pointers in the second frame.
But it was not nearly enough even with a stellar third quarter by the Crusaders. Cape Tech outscored the Lions 17-15 in that frame but the hosts maintained a 10-point spread in spite of the effort. The third frame ended 56-46, Lions.
Crusaders’ Josh Meservey was the high scorer for his squad, scoring 20 points on the night, including an inspiring eight points in the third quarter.
Lions’ senior Diego Meritus — who will be heading to Middlebury College in the fall to play football — was a testimony to pure hustle in this tourney-clinching affair. Meritus had six points, eight assists, seven rebounds and two steals. Jonathan Warden added seven rebounds to the effort.
