Sturgis East Downs Cape Tech, Fitzgerald Could Hit 1,000 Tonight

HARWICH – For the second straight night, the Sturgis East girls’ basketball team (6-8) traveled down Cape to visit the Cape Tech Crusaders (2-10) and for the second straight night came home with a much-needed win.

Senior captain Meaghan Fitzgerald also turned in her second straight night in the double digits and inched close enough last night to the 1,000-point career milestone that she could very well set the mark tonight.

Fitzgerald was at 938 career points heading into Tuesday’s game at Cape Tech and scored 28 and last night she poured in a game-high 16 points to leave her at 982 lifetime points.

Fitzgerald could set the mark tonight in Hyannis. The Sturgis East Storm faces Cape Cod Academy (1-12) tonight at 5:30 pm at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center.

If Fitzgerald hits the mark tonight she will be the second current Sturgis East player to hit the vaunted 1,000-point milestone in as many weeks. Last week, Jacob Tobey of the Storm’s boys’ basketball program, hit his 1,000th career point and has been adding onto that ever since as he nears 1,100 career points.

The Storm kept its postseason hopes alive last night with a 44-32 victory over the Crusaders last night. If the team finishes at .500 it will qualify. As noted above, Fitzgerald led all scorers for the second straight night with 16.

Sturgis East sophomore point guard Caroline Sullivan finished the night 14 points and was the game’s second highest scorer.

Cape Tech’s senior captain Mikaela Eldredge led the Cruasers with nine points and fellow senior Kelci Brouwer had eight points.

The Tech did a solid job defensively in the first quarter holding Fitzgerald to just two points, but the Storm held onto a slim, 10-9 lead to open last night’s hoop match-up.

It was Sturgis East’s Sullivan who paced the Storm’s attack in the first half, largely, as she netted a pair of buckets in the first frame, and then added five more points in the second quarter, including a nice three-pointer beyond the arc. It was just enough of an effort to give Sturgis East a 17-15 halftime lead before it broke things open in the second half.

The Storm opened things up in the third quarter as soon as top-point scorer Fitzgerald turned it on and it built a 30-23 lead after three frames and then it add another 14 in the fourth quarter to keep the hosts at bay for the 44-32 finale.

“The girls played a great game,” said Sturgis East interim head coach Nick Conti. “It is always a great feeling when you win but even better when you can win two in a row.”

Sturgis East used the foul line to its advantage in the second half, going 9-13 as a team and Fitzgerald did not deviate from her teammates in that regard. The senior co-captain went 4-5 from the stripe in the fourth frame to help keep the lead.
