Group Trying to Save Cape Wind Delivers Petition to National Grid

windfarmBARNSTABLE – The Better Future Project is fighting to keep the Cape Wind project alive.

The group is working to get National Grid to honor its contract to purchase 50 percent of the power that would be generated by the offshore windfarm.

The group delivered a petition to National Grid yesterday, according to Communications Coordinator Emily Kirkland.

“We’ve had nearly 100,000 people sign the petition to National Grid asking them to reinstate their contract to buy power from Cape Wind,” said Kirkland.

Kirkland said she believes National Grid is listening.

“They know that the opinion of their customers and the residents of Massachusetts make a big difference for their business,” said Kirkland. “So they are absolutely paying attention.”

Better Future Project will hold a “Save Cape Wind” rally on Saturday at 1 p.m. on Boston Common and Kirkland said hundreds of people are expected to attend.

“We’ll plant 130 colorful knee-high pinwheels in the snow to symbolize the 130 turbines that Cape Wind promises to bring to the waters offshore,” said Kirkland.

National Grid, along with Eversource Energy, terminated their contracts with Cape Wind on December 31 after the project failed to meet specified funding deadlines.
