HYANNIS – Main Street Hyannis is getting some international acclaim.
The International Downtown Association has chosen Main Street and the Waterfront District as the “Downtown of the Month,” recognizing Hyannis for “its beautiful beaches, historic Cape Cod architechture, and charming restaurants and fun attractions,” while also highlighting out the 120 local “mom ‘n pop” specialty shops on Main Street.
The move puts Hyannis in elite company in the IDA’s eyes, following their previous two selections of New York’s Times Square and Union Square in San Francisco as the downtown districts of the month.
“I think we have a special place when we are in this mix because people know of Hyannis,” said Elizabeth Wurfbain, the Executive Director of the Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District.
The association also recognized local efforts to curb recent problems with the homeless population, saying downtowns across the world are faced with similar challenges.
“We really do try to put ourselves on the maps and in people’s minds as a great place to visit and live, especially in this day and age when we do have urban issues that exist,” Wurfbain said.
In the announcement, the IDA called Hyannis “an interesting and eclectic all-American Main Street.”
