MASHPEE – Mashpee firefighters were called to Shellback Place at 133 Falmouth Road about 1:30 PM after a report of an odor of gas. Crews reportedly found readings in the building and evacuated the businesses in the complex including a day care center. National Grid and a town gas inspector were called to the scene. The gas service was secured while officials attempted to determine source of the odor. Occupants were able to return to the building a short time later. Subsequent investigation led to the discovery of a gas leak on Simon’s Road in the Willowbend complex. The fumes apparently drifted over to Shellback Place. National Grid was on scene making repairs. Further details were not immediately available.
