Provincetown to Use 2017 to Spread Awareness for Anniversary Celebration

PROVINCETOWN – America’s First Destination continues to prepare for the 400th anniversary of the Pilgrims landing in 1620.

The Executive Director of Provincetown 400 Lisa Giuffre said 2017 will be used to raise awareness for the yearlong celebration in 2020.

Giuffre says the message will be quite visible to residents and visitors throughout the summer.

“I know that through the season we will be quite visible in town through a variety of methods, including perhaps performers in an around town, just letting people know that there is something big coming up,” Giuffre said.

Although Giuffre did not have any specifics when it comes to 2020, she did say that a kickoff event is being planning for the spring, along with a significant event in November around the anniversary of the Pilgrims landing.

The celebration will also be more than just celebrating that single moment.

“It’s really about leveraging this incredible nationally important event to highlight what makes Provincetown, and the Outer Cape in particular, a great place to live, work and play,” Giuffre said.

The celebration will honor all of the last 400 years since the landing, including the whaling and fishing era, the Portuguese era, the art colony aspect and the gay and lesbian community.

“There is so much. There is such a rich story to tell and so we want to honor those important stories all across the last 400 years,” Giuffre said. “And look to the future.”

An educational effort is also being planned to spread awareness of the P-town landing.

“Certainly we’ll have our pomp and circumstance events, but we’re also looking at things that really have an impact and a lasting effect on the communities out here,” Giuffre said.

Giuffre said a train of good ideas has been rolling since she took over as executive director in September.

“I feel like right now we have a pretty good vision,” she said.
