Five Area Adults Awarded Scholarships by the Cape Cod Foundation

SOUTH YARMOUTH – The Cape Cod Foundation has awarded scholarships to five adults to help them pursue educational opportunities and improve their lives.

These scholarships aren’t going to recent or soon-to-be high school graduates however. They’re being awarded to five area adults currently in the workforce looking to pursue a new educational goal in their life.

Kelly Medeiros of Wellfleet and Chanda Uy of Pocassett both earned the Cape Cod Women’s Association Scholarship, which the Cape Cod Fo8ndation established earlier this year. Medeiros also won the Foundation’s Cape Cod Young Professionals Career Connect Scholarship. Both of these scholarships help adults return to school, train them for a new profession, or offers courses that help them improve in their personal lives.

Uy has taken university-level classes at Cape Cod Community College while working full time at a family-owned restaurant. Uy completed her 40-hour practicum in a kindergarten classroom while at CCCC, and plans to transfer to Mary Baldwin University in Virginia.

The Cape Cod Foundation also awarded three other students with the Scarbrough Adult Learner Scholarship, supporting adults returning to school to pursue an undergraduate degree.

After graduating Bridgewater State University in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in English, South Dennis Caitlyn Coughlin is currently the Academic Center Coordinator and the Peer Leadership Teacher at Monomoy Regional High School. She is pursuing her master’s degree at Bridgewater State with use of this scholarship.

Sarah Tanner, a Special Needs Educational Assistant at Wellfleet Elementary School plans to take courses at CCCC this fall with the goal of one day becoming a full time teacher.

Rodney Vaughn is using the scholarship to pursue his plans of changing careers. Vaughn is currently a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Provincetown. He hopes to one day open up a year-round, full-service barbershop in Provincetown that features his own line of hair, beard, skin, and nail care products for men.
